“Friends”? Who would have thought that the American Kennel Club and the Zoos would have anything in common! Another way to squeeze in some new legislation about “hand rearing” any animal.
Alan Kalter is

He is a past member of the Morris Animal Foundation Executive Committee (an animal rights group with Andrew Rowan of the HSUS on the animal welfare committee) and is currently on the board of the Detroit Zoo. Alan also served as First Vice President and Treasurer of the Detroit Kennel Club.
- CEO Advertising Agency, is/has been responsible for advertising for Iams Dog Food, Pet Smart, Morris Animal Foundation, American Kennel Club, Detroit Zoo, Detroit Kennel Club, Michigan Humane Society, has been a member of the American Bullmastiff Association 15 years, Glass City Bullmastiff Fanciers 5 years, Midwest Bullmastiff Fanciers 15 years, is a member of Morris Animal Foundation Board of Directors, Detroit Zoological Park Board of Directors and the Detroit Kennel Club.
How does Animal Rights work?
While most have their eye on the APHIS regulations, HSUS is spinning it’s web in another direction. Notice that AKC Chairman Alan Kalter is on the Board of the Detroit Zoo. Guess who, just recently, filed a petition to the USDA about banning “hand rearing.”
“The USDA is taking comments on a HSUS Petition to prohibit the hand rearing of all primates, big cats and bears. Only with the written approval of a veterinarian, stating it was a medical necessity, could the offspring of these species be removed for hand rearing.” This means that if you know a litter has been abandoned by its mother, you would not be able to do anything about it without the express written permission from a veterinarian! If it’s Saturday, guess what litter wouldn’t make it until Monday morning when the Vet decides to go to work!
While that particular petition is regarding “wildlife”, guess what species will be next on the list!!!! Dog, Cats, Horses, Cows, Pigs…..We are talking PETS and FOOD here! Now guess who supports this HSUS petition. “Petitioners include the Humane Society of the United States, World Wildlife Fund, The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, The International Fund for Animal Welfare, Born Free USA, The Fund for Animals, Big Cat Rescue, and the Detroit Zoological Society. (DETROIT ZOO!, AKC Chairman Alan Kalter IS ON THE Detroit Zoological Park Board of Directors) You have to scroll all the way to the bottom to the footnotes to catch that one!
“ROYAL OAK, Mich., September 12, 2012 – The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) has established a fund to facilitate the rescue of animals with the intent to provide sanctuary at the Detroit Zoo. The Kalter/Lezotte Fund for Wildlife Rescue has been named for Chris Lezotte and DZS board member Alan Kalter in recognition of their substantial lead gift.”
Excuse me, but how many of you home/hobby breeders “hand rear” your pets?!
